Get a G Driver’s Licence

When you are looking to get your valid G license, there are specific requirements that you must meet to obtain your G license and there are also certain G license restrictions within each license class. License class G permits a driver to drive any car, van, small truck, or a combination of vehicles and towed vehicles up to 11,000 kilograms. This would deem the vehicle as a Class G vehicle due to the license G class weight restrictions.

Graduated Licensing System

It’s important to note that Ontario’s Class G license is a graduated licensing system. This means you must spend a certain amount of time practicing with the first level of license (G1 License) before leveling up to the next (G2 License, then Full G license). Graduated licensing systems are designed to give new drivers time to practice and gain further driving experience over a designated amount of time. The order of each class G license is as follows: G1 license, G2 license, and G license.

Graduate-Licensing1
Graduate Licensing System

How Long Do I Have to Finish The Graduate Licensing System?

  • You will have five years to finish the whole process. Meaning, that if you have not obtained your full G license after five years, you will need to start over and begin at the class G1 license level.
  • Each level of the graduated licensing has certain G1, G2, or G. G requirements that must be met and have certain G1, G2, and class G restrictions associated with that level that an individual must ensure they follow.
  • When individuals begin their journey of holding a Class G license, all individuals will start at a Class G1 license level. One restriction at the G1 Level is that all G1 Drivers must drive accompanied by a fully licensed G driver who has at least four years of driving experience.

What is The Point of Graduated Licensing?

Graduated licensing allows new drivers to develop essential skills, knowledge, and confidence over a given time and allows new drivers to learn driving situational awareness. Additionally, the pros of a provincial graduated licensing system are that the program helps develop safer drivers and reduces collisions.
